In the summer holidays when I was a student I had a job as a door-to-door salesman (of kids’ books) in California with Southwestern Advantage.
It was a brutally difficult, but incredibly educational experience – in fact, I sometimes think I learnt more in those few months’ knocking on doors than I did in 4 years’ University!
I was recently reminded of one of the powerful sayings they taught us to live by whilst we were out selling:
“Life is 10% what happens to you, 90% how you respond”
Of course, this does not quite always hold true, but I do still think it is a brilliant rule to live by much of the time.
It’s also a great rule of thumb when on an expedition, and indeed, when working as a keynote speaker!
