The restorative power of a good night’s sleep

“Never forget the restorative power of a good night’s sleep”

When everything feels like it is going wrong, as it sometimes does, a good night’s sleep (of 7+ hours) can make a huge difference to how we handle the setback and our chances of turning things around.

A good night’s sleep resets us:

– emotionally (we feel more positive and see things in perspective);

– mentally (we can think straight, and have new ideas);

– physically (we have more energy and a boosted immune system).

One of the most frightening moments from all my expeditions was when I started to get heatstroke whilst dragging a big cart across the desert of death in Xinjiang (see photos).

The scariest thing was that I was losing my ability to think straight – very dangerous in a desert.

Thankfully, I realised the key thing I needed was not to just keep going, but to get back into a state where I could make a new plan – so I drank extra water, went to bed early, got a good night’s sleep… and, thankfully, the next morning felt so much clearer and was able to figure out a way forward.

When everything is going wrong… “Never forget the restorative power of a good night’s sleep”
